Few modern artists have the career progression that Troye Sivan has had. Sivan’s humble beginnings on YouTube gained recognition, allowing him to escalate to higher levels within the music industry. His robust discography has given fans an immense amount of music to enjoy; however, the release of his recent album, Something to Give Each Other, has been long anticipated since the singer’s 2018 record, Bloom. Those who have followed Sivan’s journey were teased with two highly energetic pop singles, “Rush” and “Got Me Started” in July and September of this year. The two songs shot to the top of the charts and set the bar high for the record’s full release. I can confidently say that Sivan met and surpassed my expectations with Something to Give Each Other.

Track three, “One of Your Girls,” quickly became a fan favorite for many. Sivan teased the track on TikTok a few days before the album’s release, revealing that it was also his favorite. The eccentric pop melody is partnered with crushing lyrics about a common experience of queer people in which their intimacy is taken advantage of and kept private out of fear or shame. Sivan sings about craving a relationship with someone who only wants him in times of convenience and desperation for connection. On October 13, 2023, he released the “One of Your Girls” music video, in which he was dressed in drag to demonstrate the obligation he feels to fit a mold as queer that straight people will sometimes take advantage of in the name of “exploration.”

Overall, the album grapples with intense emotional experiences while contributing exciting musicality. With each song, Troye Sivan aimed at discussing what we give to each other as interconnected beings. His understanding of intimate human connection makes awarding Something to Give Each Other 5/5 stars on all fronts easy.
