My initial reaction to Suki Waterhouse’s new single, OMG, is OMG! Released on January 11, Waterhouse gives her listeners a teaser for her upcoming album. Along with her new album, Waterhouse is due for a baby soon. In her most recent post on Instagram, she shows off her baby bump with the caption, “It’s* done (the album!!).” Like other fans, I am incredibly excited for Waterhouse because I have followed her career since the beginning. From her first major hit, Good Looking, to her role as Karen in Amazon Prime’s Daisy Jones and the Six, I have admired her professional dedication. OMG, and the promise of a new album marks a big leap in her career. Her sound is both maturing and refining. The lyrics in OMG examine the challenges of a toxic relationship. Waterhouse explores this theme particularly with the lyrics “You know I only tried to play your games so you could not forget my name,” “My baby’s no good for me, no good for me, no good for me,” and “You crossed the line, and I repeat, you always had it easy.” The upbeat sound of OMG juxtaposes these sad lyrics, which demonstrates the complexities of a complicated relationship, as toxic relationships can be both addicting and draining. I am stunned by her progress as a lyrical genius and her ability to capture desperate feelings in harmful relationships. I give OMG a 4/5 because although it instantly grabbed my attention, it sounds very similar to her other songs. I am hoping on her new album she will shock fans by experimenting with unique sounds and lyrics. Her album cover art is promising, as Waterhouse leans against a railing on a tile wall wearing a large fur coat. It gives a grunge hippie vibe, which leads me to assume that her new album will have an edge to it. I look forward to seeing how Suki Waterhouse captures more specific emotions and explores new sounds in her new album. Things are looking good for Waterhouse’s future in both her career and personal life!
