Whether you love him or hate him, Drake is back with For All The Dogs. With this album, Drake tied Michael Jackson for the most number 1 hits by a male solo artist, leading J. Cole to his first number 1 hit in the process.

The opening track, “Virginia Beach,” is surprising since there’s no Pusha T diss. This is partially because of their long history of beef, but also because Pusha is from Virginia Beach and his wife’s name is Virginia. However, the Frank Ocean sample is beautiful. Drake sampled an unreleased Frank Ocean song intended for the movie, Django:Unchained.

The obvious standout is “First Person Shooter” feat. J. Cole. Two of the biggest artists in the game go back and forth over a hard and abrasive beat comparing themselves to dominant figures like Muhammad Ali, Michael Jackson, and The Beatles. However, this is the start of a four-track run on the album with “IDGAF” feat. Yeat, “7969 Santa” and “Slime You Out” feat. SZA. “IDGAF” shows Drake embracing the rage-rap style that has been prominent in the underground scene.

The track is followed by “7969 Santa,” which is another late-night anthem for driving or 3 am. This is typical R&B Drake for late-night vibes and reminiscing over failed relationships. Drake showcases his vocal ability at the beginning of “Slime You Out,” and SZA does not fall short. The final standout is “What Would Pluto Do,” which is a break from the more emotional tracks.

The last eight tracks do not stand out and blur together. However, “Rich Baby Daddy” has emerged as a post-release single and one of the most popular songs. There are R&B tracks to chill to and Hip Hop tracks to dance and vibe to. I would give it 3.5 stars.
