As Lana Del Rey is known for her experimentation with various music styles, it comes as no surprise that she has decided to venture into country. In December, Lana released her version of the classic John Denver song, Take Me Home, Country Roads. While many fans were initially confused about how the alternative pop singer would take on such a well-known country song, her listeners instantly fell in love with her spin on the beloved classic.
Lana combines elements of her alternative style while staying true to the song’s roots. The simplicity of the guitar creates a homey feel, allowing fans to feel connected with Lana through the song. One thing I enjoyed personally is the song choice’s connection to Lana’s Americana aesthetic of her earlier albums. Bringing this aesthetic back with her new music is an excellent reminder of how many early fans fell in love with her.
It has been rumored that later this year (both by media and the artist herself) that Lana will be releasing a full album of country songs. The reference title is Lasso, but of course, this is always subject to change. Some fans had a bit of a concerned reaction to this news, which is understandable considering that Lana’s recent album releases have focused more heavily on piano ballads. While the potential for a country album may be shocking to those who have fallen in love with her recent alternative pop hits, such as “Let the Light In” and “Margaret” , I am extremely excited for Lana to venture more into country music.
While this will be her first full country album, Lana has experimented with the genre in the past on songs such as “If You Lie Down With Me” and “Dance Till We Die.” As these are some of my personal favorite Lana songs, the idea of her making more songs with potentially a similar style will certainly be something to look forward to.
